**Short answer:** to reduce ghosting on a BOOX, set your reading app to HD refresh mode, do a full refresh every few pages (or tap Full Refresh when you see leftovers), and read in paged mode instead of scrolling. Turning off page animations and boosting text contrast helps too. Below is what ghosting is, why it happens, and every fix that works on BOOX, plus Kindle, Kobo and other e-ink screens.

We make Bookbeam Reader, an e-ink-first Android reading app, so this is a problem we deal with daily. Full disclosure: we'll mention where Bookbeam helps, but most fixes below are built into your device.

![Diagram comparing a partial refresh that leaves faint ghost text with a full refresh that clears the e-ink screen](https://www.bookbeam.tools/content/images/2026/11/image-mvzasnlw.webp)

Partial refreshes are fast but leave traces; a full refresh flashes the screen and clears them.

## What is ghosting on an e-ink screen?

Ghosting is the faint image of a previous page that stays visible after the screen changes. You'll see grey outlines of old text behind the new page, or a shadow where an image used to be.

It happens because e-ink works by moving tiny charged particles of pigment. To change the screen quickly, the device often does a **partial refresh**: it only nudges the pixels that changed, and it doesn't fully reset them. That's fast and saves battery, but some particles don't land exactly where they should, and traces build up over several page turns.

A **full refresh** resets every pixel. The screen flashes black and then shows a clean page. It's slower and more distracting, which is why devices don't do it on every turn by default.

Ghosting isn't damage, and it doesn't burn in. A full refresh always clears it.

## Why ghosting is worse on BOOX than on a Kindle

A Kindle runs one reading app that Amazon tuned for one screen. A BOOX runs Android, where every app draws the screen its own way: animations, scrolling lists, fading menus. Those were designed for phone screens that redraw 60 or more times a second. On e-ink, each of those small changes becomes a partial refresh, and the traces add up.

The good news: BOOX gives you more control than any other e-reader to fix it. If you're still choosing between the two, our [BOOX vs Kindle comparison](https://www.bookbeam.tools/blog/boox-vs-kindle/) covers this trade-off.

## Fix 1: use the right BOOX refresh mode

BOOX calls its refresh system BOOX Super Refresh (BSR). You choose a mode for the whole system or for each app separately. On current firmware, refresh modes live in **Control Center → EinkWise → Refresh modes**. The names vary by model and firmware version, but they follow the same idea:

| Mode | What it's for | Ghosting |
| ------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------- |
| HD | Reading books and other static content. The system default. | Least |
| Balanced | Skimming, light interaction (on firmware that offers it) | Low |
| Fast / Speed | Web browsing, social media and scrolling apps | Some |
| Ultrafast / Smooth | Video and quick app switching | Most, with detail loss |
| Regal | Some firmware: image-heavy pages, color manga and comics in third-party apps | Reduced, with slightly more flicker |

**What to do:** set every reading app to HD. Only use faster modes for browsers and apps where you scroll. Because BOOX lets you set modes per app, you don't have to compromise: your reader stays crisp while your browser stays responsive.

## Fix 2: refresh the screen fully, on purpose

When you see traces, clear them with a manual full refresh. On BOOX you can trigger it from:

- The **Control Center** Full Refresh button.
- The **Navigation Ball**, which has a Full Refresh button.
- A **bottom gesture** set to full refresh.
- The **navigation bar**, configured with a full refresh button.

Better still, let your reading app do it for you. Most good e-ink readers have a "full refresh every N pages" setting. A setting of 5 to 10 pages is a good starting point for text; drop it lower for books with lots of images.

In Bookbeam this is in Reader menu → Settings → E-ink: "Full refresh every N pages", plus a "Refresh now" button for when you just want a clean page.

![Bookbeam E-ink settings with Full refresh every N pages, Refresh now, text weight and contrast boost options](https://www.bookbeam.tools/content/images/2026/11/image-mvzee2lu.webp)

Bookbeam's E-ink tab puts the refresh interval and contrast controls in one place.

**Less ghosting, by design.** Bookbeam Reader turns pages with e-ink in mind, so your screen stays clean longer.

## Fix 3: read in pages, not scroll

Scrolling is the worst case for e-ink. Every small movement is a partial refresh, and the screen never gets a clean reset. If your reading app has a scroll or continuous mode, switch it to paged mode.

Bookbeam only uses paged screens; there's no scrolling in the reader at all. For apps that insist on scrolling, use BOOX's faster modes and accept a full refresh now and then.

## Fix 4: turn off animations

Page-curl effects, slide transitions and fading menus all create extra partial refreshes. Turn them off in your reading app. On Android you can also reduce system animations under Developer options (the animation scale settings), which helps every app at once. Only change those if you're comfortable in that menu.

## Fix 5: boost contrast and text weight

Thin, light-grey text shows ghosting more, because the difference between "old" and "new" pixels is small and grey leftovers are harder to clear. Darker, slightly bolder text gives cleaner refreshes and is easier to read anyway.

- In Bookbeam: Settings → E-ink → text weight and contrast boost. You can also switch publisher styles off, which removes grey or decorative fonts some EPUBs ship with.
- In NeoReader: boldness and dark color enhancement in its display settings.
- On a BOOX system level, some firmware offers contrast or dark-color enhancement per app.

More on choosing a reader for BOOX in [the best reading app for BOOX (and how it compares to NeoReader)](https://www.bookbeam.tools/blog/best-reading-app-for-boox/).

## Fix 6: be careful with dark mode and images

White text on a black page tends to ghost more on e-ink, because large dark areas leave more visible traces when they change. If you read in dark mode, use a lower full-refresh interval.

Pages with big images, comics and color content are also harder. On color e-ink screens such as Kaleido, ghosting can show as faint color tints. For comics and manga, refresh more often, and try the Regal mode if your BOOX firmware has it.

## Fix 7: update your firmware

BOOX improves its refresh algorithms through firmware updates, and newer devices like the Note Air6 C advertise faster refresh than their predecessors. Check Settings for system updates now and then, and note that mode names can change after an update.

## Ghosting on Kindle, Kobo and other e-readers

Ghosting isn't a BOOX-only problem. The fixes are the same idea everywhere:

- **Kindle:** turn on "Page Refresh" in the reading settings to do a full refresh on every page turn.
- **Kobo:** the reading settings include a full-refresh interval; lower it if you see traces.
- **Other Android e-readers:** look for a refresh or "e-ink mode" setting in the system, and use a reading app with its own full-refresh interval. Bookbeam's E-ink settings work on any Android device.

If you're shopping for a new e-ink device, our guide to [the best Android e-ink tablets in 2026](https://www.bookbeam.tools/blog/best-android-e-ink-tablets/) compares them.

## A quick setup that works for most readers

1. Set your reading app to **HD** mode in Control Center → EinkWise → Refresh modes.
2. In the reading app, choose **paged** mode and turn off page animations.
3. Set a **full refresh every 6 pages** or so. Adjust to taste.
4. Bump **text weight or contrast** one step up.
5. Add a **full refresh shortcut** to a gesture or the navigation bar for the odd messy page.
6. Use a physical button or remote to turn pages, so your finger doesn't trigger extra redraws. See our [Bluetooth page turner setup guide](https://www.bookbeam.tools/blog/bluetooth-page-turner-android/).

## How Bookbeam handles ghosting

We built Bookbeam e-ink first because most Android readers weren't. Here's what that means in practice. Again, full disclosure: we make it.

- Paged screens only, with page turns designed to avoid ghosting.
- An E-ink settings tab with "Full refresh every N pages" and "Refresh now".
- Text weight and contrast boost, and publisher styles on or off.
- A landscape side rail that keeps controls out of the text area.
- Page turns from tap zones, volume keys, headset buttons or Bluetooth remotes.

It opens EPUB, PDF, DRM-free MOBI and AZW3, FB2, TXT and CBZ comics, and syncs your progress and highlights across devices. See all [Bookbeam features](https://www.bookbeam.tools/features/), or compare it with every major Android reader in [our guide to the best e-book reader apps for Android](https://www.bookbeam.tools/blog/best-ebook-reader-app-android/).

## FAQ

### Is ghosting bad for my e-ink screen?

No. It's a normal side effect of partial refreshes and doesn't damage the display. A full refresh clears it completely.

### What's the best BOOX refresh mode for reading?

HD mode. It gives the crispest text with the least ghosting. Save Fast or Ultrafast modes for browsing and video.

### How often should I do a full refresh?

Every 5 to 10 pages works for most text. Go lower for comics, images or dark mode, and higher if the flash bothers you.

### Can I set a different refresh mode for each app on BOOX?

Yes. BOOX lets you set a refresh mode per app without changing the system-wide setting.

### Why is there more ghosting in some apps than others?

Apps built for phones use animations and scrolling that create lots of partial refreshes. Apps built for e-ink avoid them.

## The bottom line

Ghosting is the price of fast e-ink, and you can control most of it: HD mode, regular full refreshes, paged reading and stronger text. Pair those settings with a reader built for e-ink and it mostly disappears. Bookbeam gives every new account a 7-day Pro trial, no card needed.
